The Department of Special Education offers four undergraduate majors in special education and a dual major in special education and elementary education. Our programs have earned excellent state and national reputations and are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Teaching students with special needs can offer unique challenges and personal satisfaction. Our special education programs include both classroom lectures and many opportunities for observation and experience in public school classrooms and agencies.
You will gain a thorough understanding of disabilities, such as visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, emotional or mental disabilities, and autism, and how they affect students, their families, schools, and society. You'll graduate well prepared to enter the classroom as a licensed teacher.
Teachers College is a leader in using technology in the classroom. To help our graduates become skilled at using technology, all education majors are required to purchase Apple laptops to use in their course work. You will also use the computer to create a digital portfolio.
More information about the laptop requirement is sent to admitted students prior to enrollment. You are encouraged to wait to purchase your laptop until you receive this information.
