Design and Technology

B.A./B.S. Design and Technology

The Design and Technology Option is intended for the student who wishes to pursue a career in design or technical theatre. Areas of concentration include sound, scenic, costume, lighting, and hair and makeup.

Our low student-to-faculty ratio encourages the individuality of each designer and technician.  Students receive personalized, hands-on advising and mentoring in both design and technology from a faculty of working professionals who provide unique perspectives and bring real-world experience into the classroom.

This undergraduate-only program that allows students to engage in every aspect of a production with coursework that focuses on the whole theatre artist: design theory and technical skills are equally valued.  The curriculum offers the following:

  • Frequent distinguished guest artists and designers
  • Immersive learning – Opportunities to collaborate with students from other disciplines on projects with real-world impact
  • A four-year program tailored to each student's particular interests
  • Senior year portfolio review that guarantees students are ready to transition to the professional world
  • Active award-winning participant in SETC (Southeastern Theatre Conference) and USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology)
  • 15-20 theatre and dance performances each year in our mainstage, studio, and workshop spaces, giving students access to numerous hands-on production opportunities.

All theatre students also complete a strong core of liberal arts courses. The Design and Technology Option requires 64 semester hours of credit.
