Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

Ball State University has embarked on a new approach to support students and their parents with respect to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of education records for students.

To comply with FERPA, Ball State has developed a new proxy authorization. Any inquiry made by someone other than the actual student with bursar, financial aid, or registrar regarding student information will require the student to authorize the parent or other individual through this system. The student may choose to authorize up to four parents/family members. Without this authorization, we will be unable to discuss the specifics of the student record.

Students can authorize parents to view and discuss academic information and discuss financial information with Ball State staff members. Academic information includes grades, class schedule, and overall academic standing with the university (good, probation, disqualified). Financial information includes financial aid application status and awards, student account activity, and billing information. Students may change or revoke access for any parent or family member at any time. Learn more about how you can grant this access and view the FAQs.

We hope this service is helpful to students in facilitating good communication with parents about their educational experience. If you have questions or feedback regarding the process, please contact the Office of Registration and Academic Progress at registrar@bsu.edu or 765-285-1722.
