John Van Cura is a National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Master Teacher and Professor Emeritus of Voice at Baylor University. While a student at the Peabody Conservatory of Music (bachelor’s and master’s degrees), he discovered a passion and ability to diagnose and help other singers with vocal problems. His teaching career began at Mercer University from 1966-1976. During this time he was a frequent soloist with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and also earned his doctorate at Florida State University in vocal performance and pedagogy. He has sung over fifty opera and oratorio roles, including the major works of Bach and Haydn. His students have won many major vocal competitions and have gone on to lead careers as opera singers, recitalists, choral conductors, and voice teachers.
